Have you or a family member received Home and Community-Based Services elderly and disabled waivers? AARP Mississippi has launched a Tell Your Story initiative to gather personal stories about Home and Community-Based Services elderly and disabled waivers that will appear on AARP-affiliated websites and multimedia. Each story submission must be accompanied by a signed release form. The stories will show how these services help Mississippians age with dignity in their own homes.

The services include: homemaker services, adult day services, expanded home health services, home-delivered meals, escorted transportation, institutional respite and/or in-home respite, transition assistance and case management.

AARP Mississippi has been urging state legislators to increase funds for Home and Community-Based Services elderly and disabled waivers for several years. This year, AARP members, volunteers and staff urged the state legislature to expand funding by $16 million, the largest amount ever allocated for these services in the state’s history.

The $16 million will provide funding for half of Mississippi’s Home and Community-Based Services waiting list, which ranges from 7,800 to 9,000 people. Last year, AARP was successful in getting legislators to appropriate $5 million more for Home and Community-Based Services.

If you or a loved one has a story about how Home and Community-Based Services have helped you and your family, please consider sharing it with AARP. To share your story, you may email it aarpms@aarp.org, fax it to 601-991-3342 or mail it to Telling My Story 6360 I-55 North, Suite 160, Jackson, MS 39211. For more information, call 1-866-554-5382.
