Shane Parsons was so gung-ho that he volunteered to drive his unit's Humvee on patrol on his day off. That was the day an explosion tore off most of his legs, and also resulted in traumatic brain injury, which has been harder to diagnose and treat. His mother, Cindy, has been helping him recover from these injuries, and is Shane's main support.
