2009 AARP-UN Briefing Series on Global Aging

AARP, in cooperation with the United Nations Programme on Ageing, Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), will organize a series of briefings from 3 to 4 February 2009. These events will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Older Persons. Simultaneously, the UN Commission for Social Development will devote its forty-seventh session (4-13 February 2009) to discussions on the priority theme of Social Integration, including intergenerational integration.

IDOP 2008: Global Perspectives on Family Caregiving

On the occasion of the global celebration of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, AARP, the National Alliance for Caregiving, and the United Nations Programme on Ageing hosted a meeting to discuss the latest pertinent issues on family caregiving. Speakers presented regional perspectives on caregiving to highlight the increasingly important role family caregivers play around the world as the backbone of their countries' long-term care systems. A unique opportunity to share best practices and lessons learned by UN Member States and NGO representatives, this half-day event also served as a lead-up to the National Family Caregivers Month in the US in November.

The Panel Discussion, "Population Shifts: Challenges and Opportunities for Economic and Social Sustainability," organized by AARP and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) as a side event to the Annual Ministerial Review of the Economic and Social Council, addressed the demographic changes experienced globally and their impact on social and economic policies. Speakers presented country perspectives on this topic and how their national policies address the changing demographics.

 

AARP Forum on the Future Workforce
