Workshop 1: "Families and Communities: Innovative Approaches To Traditional Support Systems"

Description: This workshop will examine how changes in traditional family structures are impacting the lives of older people in Asian countries. Experts from China, India, Japan, and Korea will explain how each of their societies is confronting these changes and adapting. Particular emphasis will be placed on how community and grass-roots organizations can assist older people and their families given the pressures of smaller family sizes, urbanization, and rapid economic and social change.

Description:This panel discussion will examine the “three pillars” of retirement income planning and the important role of the individual, state, and employer in insuring adequate retirement income and a dignified life for retirees throughout Asia and North America. Workshop 3: "Tapping the Vast Human Capital of Older Workers"

Description:This workshop will discuss the role of older workers in labor markets as societies age and, in many cases, labor forces and populations begin to decline. Companies and governments are increasingly becoming aware of the value and contributions older workers can make and are changing policy and practices to accommodate older workers. Experts from Australia, Japan, India, and the United States will examine the future role of older workers in the region.

Description:This panel discussion will focus on the increasing importance of NGOs in organizing and providing services to older people in Asia. NGOs can often fill a void left when individuals, governments, or the private sector cannot satisfy the needs or aspirations of older citizens. NGO leaders from China, India, Japan, and the United States will examine how the NGO sector can be strengthened in Asia.
