AARP held an international conference in Tokyo, Japan, from March 14–16, 2007, to explore how Asian societies are dealing with issues related to retirement, aging societies, and quality of life for retirees and older workers. “Reinventing Retirement Asia” was the third in a series of symposia examining how different countries confront and address retirement and the needs and talents of older people.
AARP was supported by two National Hosts for the conference -- the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (“Nikkei”) newspaper and JANCA (Japan NGO Council on Aging). The United Nations Population Fund, whose conference facilities were used for most of the conference events, was a supporter. The Nikkei provided extensive coverage in their newspaper and website. The Financial Times was involved at the senior editorial level. The conference was supported by generous gifts from Samsung Corporation, The Hartford Life Insurance Company KK, Reliance Capital Limited, China Healthcare Holdings Ltd., Aioi Insurance Company, and Secom Corporation.
Participants
The conference convened approximately 150 attendees from more than 10 countries, including China, Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, and the United States. Speakers and participants lead decision and opinion makers in government, NGOs, academia, and business dealing with aging issues, pension reform, and retirement in their countries. The principal language of the conference was English.
