Greetings and Welcome to AARP Vermont.

AARP Vermont is your state office based in Montpelier, currently serving a statewide membership of more than 120,000...and growing. We take pride that so many of our members are contributing to the economy of the state and wellbeing of our communities by working full or part time, care giving and volunteering across the state to enrich the lives of others.

The mission of AARP Vermont falls into four broad categories - advocacy, community service, information and providing value to our Vermont members. Our staff in the Montpelier office works with AARP volunteers and other Vermont organizations to carry out this mission in an effort to lead positive social change and improve the lives of people over 50.

On the advocacy front at the state level we work diligently in representing your interests and concerns as an AARP member and a Vermonter. We are actively working with the legislature, the Governor's office, other organizations, consumer groups and state government on a host of issues that impact older Vermonters. These range from consumer protections and age discrimination to health care and energy affordability. Not only do we advocate for laws, regulations and programs benefiting older Vermonters, but we are committed to educating voters and the public on these issues as they develop.

As we work on the issues of today, we are also focused on the future and the sharply increasing number of aging Baby Boomers.

We want to help Vermonters seek an answer to the question, "Can Vermonters afford to grow old?"

AARP Vermont is playing a leading role by facilitating this discussion as the state and local communities plan for the future.

You may have heard about our two most popular community service programs - AARP Tax Aide and AARP Driver Safety. Tax Aide is a free tax return preparation service of the AARP Foundation offered to older and low or moderate income Vermonters across the state. Driver Safety is an 8-hour classroom driver refresher course specifically geared to the needs and concerns of older drivers. There are some 200 devoted volunteers working on these programs across the state and they are always looking for new faces to join the team. Call us at 866-227-7451 for more information.

Providing valuable information and education to members and the public is an ongoing priority at AARP. Through our Web sites, literature, publications, the media and community outreach we seek to keep you informed on the important issues you care about. And since we know that everyone enjoys a bargain once in a while, we are putting together a host of special deals available only to AARP members in Vermont featuring local arts, music, recreation and fitness offerings.

As AARP Vermont president, I am currently serving on Governor Douglas' Commission on Healthy Aging working to coordinate private and public efforts to assist Vermonters as they age. Issues surrounding chronic care, exercise, and a healthy diet continually surface, as we look at the importance of healthy aging to the individual and to Vermont as a whole. I also represent AARP Vermont on the board of directors of Cathedral Square Corporation, the state's largest provider of affordable senior housing, and serve on the Vermont Department of Aging and Independent Living Advisory Board.

Indeed, AARP Vermont has become a strong voice for older Vermonters…and a powerful advocate. You can be proud of the work we do on your behalf and I encourage you to learn more about AARP Vermont and the many opportunities open to you as a member. Together we most certainly have "The power to make it better."

Nancy C. Lang
AARP Vermont State President
