North Dakota AARP Members Surveyed

In February and March 2004, AARP conducted a survey of North Dakota members. A sample of 2,000 AARP members in North Dakota were randomly selected in age segments that matched the age segments of our general population.

The survey contained several questions about issues that affect our aging population. From more than 20 issues listed, North Dakota members noted their top concerns include: safety and security of retirement savings (72%), access to affordable prescription drugs (64%), independence with age (62%) and a secure Social Security base for retirement (61%).

Members in North Dakota would like to see AARP take as the top legislative priorities the cost of health care (70%), access to affordable prescription drugs (66%), the quality of health care (61%) and the availability of health care (55%).

Almost two-thirds of North Dakota members (65%) support changing existing state law to allow people to collect Social Security and unemployment benefits simultaneously. Currently, individuals receiving Social Security benefits, who apply for unemployment insurance, will have half of what they receive from Social Security deducted from the unemployment benefit they have earned. It's called an "offset." Five in eight members (64%) think it is important for AARP North Dakota to work to change state law regarding this offset.

Periodic surveys are performed to help AARP North Dakota stay informed of our members' priorities and concerns. See the complete survey.
