AARP Hawaii is pleased to be a sponsor of Caring for Family, Caring for Yourself: An Oahu Caregiver's Conference at the Hawaii Convention Center June 10. The conference for family and professional caregivers features workshops and self-care activities on topics ranging from coping with Alzheimer's and exploring the legal issues of care-giving, to avoiding frauds and scams that target the elderly.

The conference provides caregivers with the information and resources to be as good to themselves as they are to the people they love. Keynote speaker Clarence Liu will offer a presentation titled "A Call to Care: Finding Inspiration and Strength from Within."

This event will be held in conjunction with the Tools for Life Expo, featuring exhibits of assistive technologies, products and services for the elderly and people with disabilities.

The Oahu conference is the first in a series of related events to be held on the neighbor islands in the following week:

  • A Kauai Caregiver Workshop: Discover Eden at Home — June 13, Aloha Beach Resort (9:30 a.m. — noon).
  • A Hilo Caregiver Workshop: Discover Eden at Home — June 14, Naniloa Volcanoes Resort (9:30 a.m. — noon).
  • A Maui Caregiver Workshop: Discover Eden at Home — June 15, Maui Beach Resort (10 a.m. — noon).

The Discover Eden at Home workshops will introduce a new concept in long-term care that is helping people and institutions across the country create a balanced experience of care. These interactive workshops feature author and gerontologist Dr. Bill Thomas, as well as Nancy Fox, executive director of the Eden Alternative, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of elders and their caregivers.

The Oahu Caregiver's Conference and Discover Eden at Home workshops are sponsored by AARP, HMSA, ALU LIKE, Inc., and the Hawaii State Agencies on Elderly Affairs.

Cost of the Oahu conference is $30, including lunch for those who register by June 5. There is a $5 registration fee for the Kauai workshop. Both the Hilo and Maui workshops are free.

Pre-registration is required for all events. Find registration materials online.
