Mike Lofgren began working as a Republican staffer on Capitol Hill in the early '80s, and more recently as an analyst for the House and Senate budget committees.

But his opinions of Washington's ways are far from right-wing — or left either, as evidenced by the title of his new book, The Party Is Over: How Republicans Went Crazy, Democrats Became Useless, and the Middle Class Got Shafted. In a painful but well-documented critique, Lofgren examines how the Republican Party has changed since the '50s, documents both parties' extreme entanglement with corporate money and highlights Newt Gingrich's role in today's perception of the GOP.
