The latest Bloomberg National Poll shows Americans are opposed to cutting treasured entitlement programs such as Medicare and Social Security.
These and other popular public programs — including education and community-renewal programs — account for 40 percent of the federal budget.
In a question about how Americans feel about an impending government shutdown, almost 8 in 10 responded that Congress should compromise.

"Fewer than half of respondents say cutting Medicare benefits or raising the age at which Americans receive Social Security retirement benefits would have a large impact on the deficit, and only 2 in 10 favor cutting Medicare benefits," according to the poll.
