Bloomberg Poll: Americans Oppose Entitlement Cuts

Many want to keep Medicare, Social Security funding

The song is different, but the refrain is the same: Do not cut our social programs.

The latest Bloomberg National Poll shows Americans are opposed to cutting treasured entitlement programs such as Medicare and Social Security.

These and other popular public programs — including education and community-renewal programs — account for 40 percent of the federal budget.

In a question about how Americans feel about an impending government shutdown, almost 8 in 10 responded that Congress should compromise.

But how? That's the government's job. Figure it out, respondents say, but don't touch our programs.

"Fewer than half of respondents say cutting Medicare benefits or raising the age at which Americans receive Social Security retirement benefits would have a large impact on the deficit, and only 2 in 10 favor cutting Medicare benefits," according to the poll.
