Congressional Budget Cuts and Medicare

Former Sen. Breaux and former Rep. Tauzin weigh in on healthcare spending

Medicare is one of the biggest expenditures in the national budget. And over the next month, a bi-partisan congressional super-committee has to decide how to cut 1.5 trillion dollars from the national budget.

If the committee doesn’t make the deadline, automatic cuts will be made across the board which will affect different expenditures on the budget in proportion to their size.

Former Senator John Breaux (D-LA), former Co-Chairman of National Bi-partisan Commission on the Future of Medicare and former Congressman Billy Tauzin (R-LA,) former Pres. and CEO of PhRMA and Chairman of House Energy and Commerce Committee discuss how healthcare reform and budget cuts could affect Medicare.

They suggest that as the congressional super-committee’s deadline, for cutting 1.5 trillion dollars from the national budget looms, Congress needs to set aside their political agendas and make some very tough decisions. Both believe that it’s a “no-brainer” that Medicare should not be cut at all, especially when “boomers” are the fastest growing constituency.
