Overview: Retired state Circuit Court Judge Duke Aiona carries the colors as Republicans try to retain control of the statehouse. As prosecutor, judge and lieutenant governor, Aiona has coordinated and led a number of efforts addressing the problems of alcohol and drug dependence. He's being challenged by former Rep. Neil Abercrombie, who left Congress early last year to wage his full-time campaign. A Buffalo, N.Y., native, he moved to Hawaii and earned his Ph.D. in American studies and served in Congress for two decades, where he gained a reputation as a serious weightlifter and as a protector of Hawaii's military bases.
