Hawaii: Battle for the Statehouse

POLITICS_SOCIETY_govt elections

Incumbent: Gov. Linda Lingle (R) is term-limited

Republican: Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona

Democrat: Former Rep. Neil Abercrombie

2008 Presidential Result: Obama 72%; McCain 27%

55+ Population (2009 estimate): 26.5%

Overview: Retired state Circuit Court Judge Duke Aiona carries the colors as Republicans try to retain control of the statehouse. As prosecutor, judge and lieutenant governor, Aiona has coordinated and led a number of efforts addressing the problems of alcohol and drug dependence. He's being challenged by former Rep. Neil Abercrombie, who left Congress early last year to wage his full-time campaign. A Buffalo, N.Y., native, he moved to Hawaii and earned his Ph.D. in American studies and served in Congress for two decades, where he gained a reputation as a serious weightlifter and as a protector of Hawaii's military bases.

50+ Facts: Check the latest economic statistics and details on the state budget deficit.

Fun Fact: Aiona's first public job was as an assistant state prosecutor in Honolulu, the same job that launched the public career of Sen. Daniel Inouye 57 years ago.

'Wild card' Issue: Inouye's campaign. Will the senior senator's quest for a ninth term have coattails for Abercrombie?
