En español | A new AARP survey examines voters’ opinions about the "chained CPI," a proposal in Washington that would change the way the cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) is calculated for Social Security and veterans' benefits. The survey found that voters across party lines overwhemingly oppose cutting Social Security as a way to reduce the deficit. Interestingly, the survey also found that voters would be less favorable toward their members of Congress if he or she were to vote for the chained CPI proposal.

Methodology: The survey was conducted for AARP by Woelfel Research, an independent research firm.  Interviews were conducted March 19 – April 3, 2013 among a nationally representative sample of 800 registered voters age 50+. This survey was conducted nationally and in 14 states.
