This is an opportunity for AARP members to meet with their state legislators ok key issues AARP is watching during the 2012 legislative session. These issues include preserving funding for Medicaid service providers, ensuring continued funding for the Elderly and Disabled Tax Credit as well as other consumer and health care issues.

“This is your opportunity to meet with the individuals you’ve elected to represent you in the state legislator,” said Sarah Jennings, state director for AARP South Dakota. “AARP South Dakota provides this opportunity for our volunteers each year because it is critical to demonstrate to our lawmakers that South Dakota seniors are paying attention, we’re watching the issues, and we’re willing to speak up when legislation has the potential to impact us and our families.”

“I strongly encourage those who have an interest in AARP South Dakota’s advocacy work to join us for this exciting day. Your involvement does have an impact on the decisions made in the legislature, and ultimately affects your families, your friends, and your neighbors across the state,” said Jennings.

“For those who can’t make the trip to Pierre, I encourage you be involved throughout the session in any way you can. Stay informed, attending cracker barrels or and legislative coffees in your community and contact your representatives when key issues are up for action. This is your legislature -- by being an active participant in the process you get a say in what happens and how your tax dollars are spent.”

Bus transportation for the 2012 AARP South Dakota Lobby Day will be provided at no cost from the following locations: Custer, Rapid City, Wall, and Philip in the Western Region.

There is no cost to attend, but registration is required. Only those who have registered in advance will be guaranteed seats on the bus. Lunch will be provided as well as a meal for your return trip. Call 1-877-926-8300 to reserve your seat.

Volunteers are scheduled to arrive at the State Capitol in Pierre, SD at 10:30 am CST for a briefing on the current issues. Legislators have been invited to join volunteers for lunch and conversation beginning at 11:30 am CST.

A group photo will be taken in the Capitol Rotunda at 1:30 pm. Participants will finish the day watching the state house and senate in action. Buses will depart the Capitol at 3 pm. Most buses will arrive at their original destination no later than 7:30 pm.
