AARP Texas State Director Receives LULAC Presidential Award

AARP Texas State Director, Robert A. Jackson received the 2010 League of United Latin American Citizens’ Presidential Award during the 81st Annual LULA National Convention. The Presidential Award is given to individuals whose achievements and community service most exemplify the ideals of the League.

Jackson has championed Hispanic outreach in Texas and committed his time, energy and resources to this effort. He is fond of telling his staff: “if we fail as an organization to address the needs and wants of the fastest-growing population in our state, we might as well close shop and go home.”

Throughout Texas, Jackson encourages staff and volunteers to work with city, community and neighborhood leaders on issues such as healthcare reform, payday lending, electricity rates, transportation, housing, public benefits and even the use of electoral machines. It is because of his commitment to do the right thing for Hispanics not only within his region but also across the country that Jackson was recognized.

His values were mirrored in the remarks given by AARP Midwest Regional Vice President Ralph Yaniz during his keynote address at the Convention’s Unity Luncheon, “I can tell you that from my perspective the importance of working in unity across all generations and groups is critical to our future – and as Latinos, with our strong sense of family and community, we must stay unidos, we have to work together to make a difference."

AARP is proud to support LULAC, the largest and oldest Hispanic Organization in the United States. LULAC advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 700 LULAC councils nationwide. The organization involves and serves all Hispanic nationality groups. … Back to Article
