AARP Has Large Presence at Annual LULAC Conference

AARP New Mexico staff and volunteers were able to share information on the work the state office is doing to reach the Hispanic population as well as the new health care law, and other local programs such as Driver’s Safety and Tax Aide, during the 81st Annual Conference of LULAC, League of United Latin American Citizens, held July 12 to 17 at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

The New Mexico State Office joined other AARP representatives during the week-long event of which AARP was a sponsor.

“At AARP, we want to do everything we can to reach out to all our neighbors and make sure we’re communicating with them effectively and working on issues that are important to them,” said Shanna Lapsley, AARP New Mexico State Associate Director for Multi-Cultural Outreach.

“As a result, the association is putting an emphasis on reaching out to Hispanic/Latino communities to create a bridge to connect them to the wealth of information AARP has to offer as well as help us determine what needs they have and where AARP should be focusing its resources in the social change arena,” Lapsley said.

“The LULAC conference being here in Albuquerque helped the state office connect with some of the people that are driving forces in the Hispanic/Latino community,” she said.

The AARP/Walgreens Wellness Bus was parked on the convention floor. Conference participants could visit the bus and get checked for glucose levels, bone density, cholesterol and body mass index. The bus is scheduled to return to New Mexico in the fall.

AARP was an official sponsor of the conference including the Unity Luncheon held July 15th. Midwest Regional Vice President Ralph Yaniz gave the keynote address at the luncheon.

In this remarks, Ralph told the LULAC audience, “I can tell you that from my perspective the importance of working in unity across all generations and groups is critical to our future – and as Latinos, with our strong sense of family and community, we must stay unidos, we have to work together to make a difference."

AARP is proud to support LULAC, the largest and oldest Hispanic Organization in the United States. LULAC advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 700 LULAC councils nationwide. The organization involves and serves all Hispanic nationality groups.

Another event within the Hispanic community coming up will be the 18th Annual Hispanic Culture Festival put together by De Colores Inc. AARP New Mexico is a sponsor. Events will run from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 in the Albuquerque area. This year’s theme is education. Events feature a statewide student essay and poster contest, a two-day arts expo, and culminating in a leadership awards banquet.
