2013 AARP Legislative Survey of Registered Voters Age 50 and Older in New York

Annotation and Methodology from the 2013 AARP Legislative Survey of Registered Voters Age 50 and Older in New York. The study examines the respondents opinions on various issues such as caregiving, prescription drugs, health and long-term care, grandparenting and consumer protection issues.

Key findings include:

  • 61 percent of registered voters age 50+ in New York is worried about staying in their homes as they get older.
  • 71 percent of registered voters age 50+ in New York say that it is extremely or very important that home and community-based services are available in their communities.  Another 19 percent said it was somewhat important
  • While 32 percent of voters are currently or have previously provided caregiving services, 56 percent of respondents indicated that it was at least somewhat likely that they will need to provide unpaid care in the near future to a family member or friend
  • 59% of caregivers in New York have been employed while caregiving

This report is based on data from a mail survey of 5,000 New York State residents age 50 and older who are registered voters. The survey was fielded from November 20, 2012 through December 21, 2012.  Responses were weighted to reflect the actual distribution of residents by age and gender.
