Here is your opportunity to participate in a special project that will honor the memory of those who lost their lives in New York on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. AARP volunteers are collecting personal hygiene items to be given to the homeless in Frederiksted, St. Croix on Sept. 11. The event will take place at the Frederiksted Market between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The project is the brain child of members of AARP’s “My Personal Time” group led by Vera Falú. Representatives from all three Virgin Islands gathered recently to organize the event and to identify the items they will be soliciting from the public. The hope is to provide each person with a “goodie bag” containing personal hygiene items that will help them stay healthy and perhaps make their lives a bit more comfortable.

Consisting mainly of toiletries and basic necessities, volunteers hope to provide the Frederiksted homeless with: tooth brushes, tooth paste, soaps, shampoo, moisturizing cream or lotion, and hand sanitizers. Also being collected for this effort are men’s and women’s plain white t-shirts, flip-flops, towels and sports-type water bottles.

Over the years Virgin Islands Day of Service projects have included a wide variety of activities. For instance, some projects included: reading in classrooms, collecting non-perishable items for food banks, painting and sprucing up Herbert Grigg Home, collecting and delivering school supplies to vocational school programs, and on the island of St. John, providing a picnic luncheon for the visiting participants from the national Wounded Warrior injured veteran program.

Anyone wishing to donate any of these items can drop them off at the AARP Office in Sunny Isle, St. Croix. For more information on how you can help, please call 340-713-2002.
