You’ve Earned a Say in the future of Medicare and Social Security and members of the AARP Kansas Diversity Council want everyone to know about it.

That’s why they’ve traveled the state this summer and plan to continue their travels into the fall.

In May, they stopped in Wichita to meet with members of the NAACP and find out what they think needs to be done to strengthen Medicare and Social Security and make these programs stronger for future generations.

Next stop on the tour was the Prairie Band Potawatomi Pow Wow near Mayetta in June. The Prairie Band Potawatomi Pow Wow is considered one of the biggest and best in the country attracting a large number of participants and observers, so Diversity Council members got to speak to lots of people, both Kansans and those from other parts of the country, about their concerns with Medicare and Social Security.

Then on to the Nicodemus Homecoming in July. Nicodemus, located in Northwest Kansas is the only remaining western town established by African Americans during the Reconstruction period following the Civil War.

Each year, the town holds a homecoming celebration and for the third year in a row, the Diversity Council has set up a booth, this year collecting questionnaires from those who stop at the booth to find out what they think should be done to keep Social Security and Medicare strong.

In September, the Diversity Council will head to the State Fair in Hutchinson and plans are being made to attend the Asian Festival in Wichita in October.

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a member of the AARP Kansas Diversity Council, or need more information, e-mail ksaarp@aarp.org or call 866-448-3619 and ask for Andrea.
