Join AARP Nebraska in “You’ve Earned a Say,” a national conversation to ensure that you have a say in the future of Medicare and Social Security.

For more than a year, Congress and the President have been talking about changes to Medicare and Social Security as part of a budget deal without any discussion about how changes would affect Americans and their families. Throughout that debate, AARP heard from members who said they’re tired of Washington playing politics with the benefits they’ve earned.

“We want to give Nebraskans of all generations a way to speak out and be heard, and we’re committed to making You’ve Earned a Say an inclusive conversation,” said Bob Eppler, AARP Nebraska State President. “AARP believes that you have earned these benefits by paying into Social Security and Medicare for years and you deserve to know about any proposed changes to these programs that are vital for so many Nebraskans.”

Indeed, Social Security and Medicare are the foundation of retirement security for most Nebraskans – a role that has become even more critical in today’s challenging economy.

In Nebraska, 308,790 residents depend on Social Security benefits to help pay their monthly bills, while 280,441 residents count on Medicare for affordable health care, including guaranteed coverage for doctors, hospitals and prescription drugs.

AARP is offering the public several outlets to express their views where they can also take part in a short questionnaire. Nebraskans will be invited to join in You’ve Earned a Say through community conversations, public forums, interactive teletown hall sessions, bus tours, webinars and other events spanning the state from Omaha to Scottsbluff this year.

People will have the opportunity to share their thoughts about strengthening health and retirement security through video interviews conducted by AARP staff.

In addition, AARP will provide information about all the proposals being discussed in the nation’s capital – both the pros and cons – so you can determine what any changes could mean for you and your family.
