Oklahoma became the first state in the nation to pass the Caregiver Advise, Record, Enable (CARE) Act this year. The new law will help family caregivers when their loved ones are hospitalized and as they transition home.
As a family caregiver for her father, Alphus, Kristin Mitchem performs complicated medical tasks to help him remain at home. She, along with her mother, Cheryl, does not have a medical background and has received no training on her new responsibilities. Sadly, this has led to setbacks in Alphus’ health — and has caused him to be readmitted to the hospital on at least one occasion.
Here Kristin tells their story and explains what the CARE Act will mean for her family.
