On June 19, 2014, Gov. Mary Fallin signed SB 1536, the Oklahoma version of the CARE Act — making Oklahoma the first state in the nation to enact the legislation. Here, Fallin reflects on her time as a family caregiver to her mother and how she knows firsthand the importance of the CARE Act. The law took effect Nov. 1, 2014, and is helping 600,000 family caregivers in Oklahoma when their loved ones go into the hospital and as they transition home.
AARP recently named Fallin a 2014 Capitol Caregiver, a bipartisan group of 46 state legislators and three governors from 19 states who were integral to the passage of key caregiving legislation in 2014.
