Perhaps you first heard of Carter from Bob Dylan's song "Hurricane," which was recorded in 1975. It told the story of the boxer wrongly convicted of murder.
By that time, Carter had been in prison for eight years. He was to serve another decade. In 1985, a judge set aside his conviction, saying the trial had been "based on an appeal to racism rather than reason" and "concealment rather than disclosure."
Carter was 50 years old upon his release.
Since that time, Carter has been a strong voice for anyone who has been unjustly convicted. In 1997, Denzel Washington starred in a biographical film about the boxer, Hurricane.
In his book, The Eye of the Hurricane, he shares the key to his freedom and freedom of spirit.
