Community Upgrade Announcement

January 8, 2014

As a member, you’ve always given us great feedback on your likes and dislikes within the AARP Online Community. On our end, we continually strive to bring you a best-in-class experience. And because of what we’ve heard lately, we’re making some changes.

In the next 2 weeks, we’re re-launching the Online Community to make it easier for you to connect with others who have similar interests. Here are some of the new features to expect:

  • Personalized views: Select how you want to view your community content with two different layouts to choose from.
  • Reply options: Choose the classic “reply” experience with an HTML editor, or a simpler “quick reply” alternative.
  • Fuller image galleries: Make photos private or public, place in unique folders, and store the ones you want to share.
  • Embedded videos: Embed your favorite videos from YouTube, Vimeo, etc. in your message posts.
  • User rankings: Not only can you be recognized for community participation, you’ll also be able to quickly identify others who’ve achieved community milestones.

Rest assured, your conversations and friends will still be in the Community, and your current user name and password will stay the same. The biggest change will be the move to “forums.” That is, all conversations will be in a new forum-like format, instead of the groups you see today.

As with any significant change, the shift will need some downtime. We expect the Online Community will be offline for 2-3 days while we tackle the behind-the-scenes work.

Before that happens, we’ll need just two quick items from you BEFORE 1/20/14:

  • Save copies of your photos/images and verify that videos are hosted elsewhere. Rich media will not be automatically moved over.
    • For PC users: Go to the “Photos” tab on your profile page. From here, you can save pictures from your albums or recent photos. Right-click on a picture to Save Image As. Then, choose the folder where you’d like to save the file.
    • For Mac users: Right click on image and select Save Image As or Save Image to Desktop, or Drag to the desktop/desired location.
  • Save your personal bio. Your bio will not be moving over, so you’ll either need to save it to your PC or note what you have currently so you can put it back up on day one.

As we approach the transition, find the most up-to-date information about the launch in the Community Help Group. As always, we appreciate your patience, dedication and contributions to the AARP Online Community. We’ll see you online!

Sincerely,

AARP Online Community Team
