Isn't it interesting how most "writers" for lack of personal knowledge will regurgitate what other writers have written along with gossip they hear from others. I am speaking of Sean Elder's article. This is as close as he ever got to Dennis.
I knew him and would like to set the record straight on a few things. For one, Dennis had a vision for his creation of Easy Rider. If he argued and was passionate about his vision he did so becuse it was his and others tried to manipulate it into theirs.
The Dennis I knew was down to earth, gentle, kind, honest, loving, real and generous. I am sure Rip Torn and Peter Fonda obviously have their own demons and huge egos to pump up by their gossip regarding Dennis. Dennis was not like that and therefore may have had to fight to keep his visions pure. I never heard him say a bad thing about anyone.
Dennis was easily charmed by beautiful women and thus made some bad choices some of whom had their own agendas of fame and fortune.
I want his children to know what a wonderful man he was. He was not a Hollywood Diva and could see right through that game. Dennis was a good man with a good heart. If others don't know him this way, I am sorry for them.
Dennis loved Taos and because of him I discovered it's wonders and these are memories that I will carry with me forever. I hope he will always be remembered for his beautiful smile and his beautiful mind and heart not just his great and unique talents.
