Welcome to our group of singles. This group is similar to a gathering of singles in your own neighborhood. But instead of getting all dolled up and sitting at tables in a restaurant, country club, or hotel meeting room, we do it here online. Please understand this group is NOT THE dating platform. The AARP Community offers a dating site section which is separate and independent of this group. Group members here, however, create subject topics that are primarily related to being single in our age group but discussions are not limited to that. The only subject we avoid here is politics and religion and we ask that the discussions concerning sexual issues are kept discrete. Along with that we of course honor the AARP websites terms of service. Other than that you can jump right in and start a discussion or participate in any of the other ongoing discussions.

Question: PICK-UP LINES

In a different discussion here in the group the question was asked “Why don't you men let the ladies know if you are interested by approaching them?” I answered the question as best I could but it brought another question to my mind. If a guy WERE to approach a lady what would the lady expect him to say? What would be a good way for him to introduce a conversation? And then there is the subject of this discussion. I have always been skeptical of pick-up lines. So the question I have is, do pick-up lines actually work?

My all time favorite pick up line is the title of a country western song:

"If I said you had a beautiful body would you hold it against me?"

So over the top cheesy that it brings laughter every time.

I answered this question in more detail on the "Dirty Word" thread. My simple answer is NO for most people. It depends upon the woman. Sincerity and a simple approach will get one much further than a line...most of which are cheesy and transparent.

There's always an exception to the rule, though.
