In Response to What do you wish you knew WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED CAREGIVING that you know now? by jane
Right now I wish that I had known about the dfferences between palliative care and hospice care and that we had called on palliative care to help my 91 year old father months ago.
With palliative care there is no rule against continuing medical treatment, going to the hospital, etc., but studies have shown that there is a great increase in quality of life for patients and for caregivers as well as longer life spans than with medical treatment alone.
An old person is often eligible for palliative care if they are not robust and managing to care for themselves even if they do not have a disease like cancer or heart failure. I would encourage any family that feels they are in over their heads with their loved one to explore palliative care.
