Aloha, I am 64 and caring for my 90 year-old mom whose aortic stenosis (tightening of heart valves) condition has worsened. Further, my 77 year-old husband is exhibiting signs of early dementia by his paranoid behavior.
First and foremost I am taking care of myself by walking 2.1 miles/day which includes a winding hill and the neighborhood. Doing this enables me to better take care of them, and also helps maintain my physical health and mental sanity.
I accept this challenge, though I do admit my human-ness sometimes takes over and I feel overwhelmed. But, I remind myself that I am only human and not up for canonization. (A little humor always helps get me through the day!) So, when I feel sad seeing mom's mortality becoming apparent, I allow myself to cry privately, and then just get on with the day.
I am glad that I am not alone. I have a wonderful support system in my life.
