We sail Carnival Conquest from Galveston, TX. Conquest was refurbished about 12 months ago. Added more balcony staterooms and a huge TV screen on the Lido deck. Show movies at night and other things in the day. The decor bright and done in the French Monet impressionist style where as VOTS is softer style State rooms are about 10 sq feet or so larger on Conquest. Balcony is through a glass door with a large window to the side vs a complete sliding glass door on the VOTS
Conquest bath room has a shower curtain vs a double sliding shower door on VOTS. Conquest Casino is larger and easier to move around with a good side bar and nice sitting are with large windows if you want to watch players
Moving from stern to the aft of the ship requires going from one deck to another in some decks of the ship. Dinning room is the aft part of the ship and you'll have to go down in mid ship to get to dinning. Not a problem, but takes a bit of getting used to as compared to the VOTS walk to deck 5 Promenade and go down one large staircase. There is NO Promenade style deck on Conquest. A large open area on deck 3, I think that goes up from Guest services to deck 5 with shops, photo area. Service is as good as you treat the servers on either ship. Smile a lot and talk with the staff. . makes their job time more fun.
Food is good. Never had a bad meal . .although I would say I prefer VOTS meals a bit over Conquest –preparation and presentation Don’t miss the Chocolate Melting Cake dessert on Conquest. Yum Lido deck (pool) deck has a great fresh hamburger, nachos, cheese, taco bar. Now that is a PLUS over VOTS precooked and sitting in a pan at Windjammer. Conquest often has breakfast or lunch buffets on the starboard side of the Lido also.
Conquest has a great deli and Asian area..made fresh most times. Conquest has a great fried fish bar called Sur Mar for lunch variation –don’t miss it VOTS had the deli area also, but not the Asian Specialty Bar of fish. Depending on which date you cruise –Western or Eastern Caribbean, you’ll enjoy the ports. Shows. . did not attend to many on either the Conquest of Voyager.
CCL calls itself "The Fun Ship" and I saw people having fun and some not having fun! Really. A cruise is what you make of it. . .the cruise does not make you have fun. We were on RCL Voyager of the Seas Barcelona to Galveston, TX 15 Day T/A. Fifteen DAYS. . . .with SIX full days and nights at sea from Canary Islands to Nassau. We had fun day and night. Viking Lounge at sunset. . .chatting with passengers, our favorite wait staff and then going to dinner at 8:15PM. . .going to shows, ending up in the Disco at 1PM. . .well, the Disco was a bit lite on attendance, but we had fun. Day time walking on the the top deck, Sitting by the pool getting tan in the day. Having lunch in the MDR or going to the Windjammer Buffet, having some drinks at the upper Pool Bar. . .Singing Karaoke at night. . .competing in the Super Star Talent Show on Sat night. . .Bottom line on either cruise line will be the time of year you cruise. Fact. . .older, retired passengers will cruise anytime they like. . .where as younger 20's - 30's will cruise when they can get vacations or time off from work. May, June, July maybe.
Here may be a deciding factor. . .CCL Conquest is less $$$ for us than RCL VOTS for most cruises when they are in Galveston at the same time.
We drove to New Orleans July 4th, 2009 to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Looking at CCL, found the CCL Fantasy departs N.O. Monday, July 6th at 4pm. Well, we said, why not just sail Fantasy for 5 days. Through our travel club, Great Escapes, we booked an Ocean View Stateroom for $417.74 PP. Now if RCL was in the same port, it would be higher.
Hope this gives you some comparison to help your decision. Bottom line. .If we what to cruise in May - Late late Nov from Galveston, CCL is our only ship.
We love Royal Caribbean. We are Platinum on RCL and also on CCL. With CCL bringing the new CCL Magic and CCL Triumph to port year round in Galveston in Nov 2011 and RCL moving the Voyager of the Seas to New Orleans and porting Mariner of the Seas in Galveston Nov 2011 - April 2012, we will have some good choices. Just wish RCL would port one ship year round in Galveston.
