Who do you walk with? Friends, groups, family, or by yourself? And why?
Below is my journal entry which inspired this question:
Walks with My Mother
My mother and I have a now longstanding tradition of going on a two mile walk around our neighborhood. I
We have our set walking path that starts on our street and winds around hills, sidewalks, and for my mother's benefit, the newest neighborhood home and garden improvements. But the path is really just a backdrop for the true purpose of our walks, time together as mother and daughter.
It's these walks with my mother that I think are the thing I will remember most about our relationship. The walks are a rare time of one on one discussion, free from distraction, where we can talk about our lives and where I often get unsolicited advice on everything from finances, to jobs, to boys.
As I get older I appreciate one more thing about these walks, the positive health effects walking has for both of us. Now I realize that by walking together, we are not just improving our present relationship, we are preserving it for the future. Finally, the walks have given me a model of what to do when I have children. I look forward to the day when three generations can walk together, sharing stories, fighting, laughing, and of course for my opportunity to be the advice giver.
