I know what you mean about the heat, California is experiencing an early summer, 96 degrees today.
There are a couple of things you can do. Probably the best is split your daily walk, half in the morning and half in the evening.
The other involves the use of a treadmill; I own one I use in the wintertime when it rains. The big problem is my dog does not get to go.
We have an old Lab so we have to be really careful in the heat. And that's a good idea about breaking up the walks instead of one long one. A couple of ideas that we use. We take him to the local big warehouse petfood stores and walk up and down the aisles. He also enjoys the social life there. We're also exploring taking him swimming - there are some special pools that are set up for dog swims. We also have a friend in Wisconsin who actually has her dog walk on her treadmill in the winter. It's a small dog, but she straddles the treadmill (and so is not on the moving part) while her dog walks. Apparently he loves it.
