I hear you on diesels my 99 Ram Cummings a short bed and I have been comfortable together for 190K miles, I bought it originally just for getting a truck camper. Then I was as cordially invited as a "we'll drop your pension can be" - to return to work for a few years and had to drive it from Maine to Boston weekly 2001-2004. Just couldn't leave Maine so, had to drive back and forth on weekends - and of course I had to take my POV=Personal Operating Vehicle, no planes.
My next diesel will be a dually - not so much for a fifth wheel but, probably for a larger Lance or Host truck camper and it will be a long bed - just waiting for my DW to decide when she can retire or if she wants to. I've retired so many time 3x then just got so bored I had to go back to work.
Don't worry about your PowerStroke it's just getting broken-in. I think I've only put about $600 in repairs to my Ram, and now I need a new exhaust maybe $200 bucks. But, I have to ask (my other vehicle is a VW TDI) what's the mileage - winter, spring, summer, fall on yours. About all I've towed lately has been a boat, a few toys, and lumber to the money pit.
Since I bought the PowerStroke for towing, I have 4:10 gears, so this does cut the milage some. I have several "Mods", cold air, inter-cooler, waste gate, 4" exhaust all the way out. I installed a Tony Wildman 4 position chip. I have more than enough power. Solo I get about 15-16MPG, with the rig and loaded, i average around 10.25 to 11.00MPG. I also have a total of 95 gals of fuel in the tanks, I installed an Aux tank of 57 gals. Like I said, I did not buy the truck for fuel milage, I just wanted the power of a Diesel.
