I live in New Hampshire when not on the road. Maine is the Pine Tree state and therefore has less fall foliage than the other NE states. Although the seacoast of any of the NE states is wonderful. The Lakes Region of NH is beautiful. You have views of the lakes such as Winnepausaukee, Winnisquam, Silver just to mention a few with mountains in the background. It is breathtaking. Cannon mountain in Franconia Notch has a tram to the top with awesome views. The Flume in Franconia State Park is close to Cannon Mountain and has beautiful waterfalls. The Kangamangus Highway which crosses from East to West (or vice versa) connects Rte 16 around Conway, NH to Rte 93 around Lincoln, NH. There are many Vistas on the Kangamangus with awesome views. There are also places to picnic by the babbling brooks. There are also many covered bridges in NH.
In Vermont, there is a neat area called Quechee Gorge. It is just over the border from NH on Rte 89. There are the views of the gorge, and then there are neat places like Cabot Farms outlet store, antique shops and we also saw hot air balloons there.
In Massachusetts, of course you have Cape Cod and the Islands, but if you find a place to camp and have a car with you, Boston has much to offer. The North Church, the Freedon Trail, views from the top of Prudential building or John Hancock building, the Aquarium, Museum of Science and much, much more.
I could go on and on. New England is truly a treasure.
Thank you for your suggestions. Most of the places you suggested we plan to visit. I am looking forward to Franconia Notch and our drive from Lincoln to Conway.
