I signed up for this a few months ago. It does require a little bit of extra effort, but you eventually get a financial 'reward', automatically entered into drawings for cash, and today I received their newsletter with coupons for nice discounts at AMC theaters, www.restaurant.com, Mrs. Field's, and Barnes and Noble.
This is a service to the vendors and they use the statistics for marketing.
When you sign up with them, they send you a scanner set-up that you leave hooked to your land-line. Everytime you purchase anything with a barcode, you scan or enter the barcode and it transmits to them. They give you a set amount of credit. Also, you can get more credit when you purchase prescription drugs. They send you email reminders and such and you can go to their website to check your credits, enter an extra credit game, and order your cash reward when you have enough credits.
If you want to do this, you can go to www.shoppersonline.com (I believe) or call 1-877-999-2949 and ask for Operator 10. I believe you have to give my ID which is 082124271 and if you stay with the program for 3 months I'll get some points. I went online and signed up without anybody's ID, so if you want to do it that way, that's fine with me.
Here is one comment I found on it by searching: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/99213/get_paid_to_scan_grocery_barcodes_from.html
But then there was a response: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/353919/10_years_of_scanning_with_shoppers.html?cat=3
The first poster had some confusion which was cleared up by the second poster who gives a lot of details. You are not REQUIRED to scan or report every single purchase, but since I only buy anything once or twice a week, it has not been a bit of 'trouble'. Also, I have had to call the company for help a couple of times and they have always connect me to a real person quickly and they were so nice to speak with!
I recently have been contacted by AICR to take part in some research. APPARENTLY, I was selected by some answers I gave on a Shopper's Hotline survey. This will be a paid participation deal! WWHHOOPPEE!
