I, too, try to save on electricity. We have replaced most of the light bulbs with the new CF type (whatever they are called). Because my daughter is disabled, she qualified for a home energy audit, and this was one of the things that got done. I believe they replaced 17 light bulbs, and we had already put some of the new types in as the old ones burned out. We will see if this saves electricity as they say.
I have a dishwasher that we run only when it is full. I would not go without it, because I believe is saves energy over washing dishes by hand. And it is more sanitary. I do let the dishes air dry, by not using the heat cycle. I use my dryer but only with full loads. I have "been there, done that" with hanging up clothes and it is not what I want to spend my time doing. Besides I don't have a clothes line, and don't see any in the neighborhood, so maybe they are not allowed. Actually, I have not been too upset with large electric bills, but would like to get quality cable service without paying through the nose. Also if there was a way to get my car payments to go away or be cut in half, I would be a rich woman. Oh well, it "ain't" gonna happen, so all we can do is cut corners where ever we can.
I agree with what you have said. My dishwasher has "extra hot" and "santizing" selections; if I use those then I don't need to use the heat dry.
Sometimes I hang clothes up to dry if it is nice outside, but usually after putting them in the dryer for 10 to 15 minutes, which makes them dry softer. Depends upon my mood - who would want to do that all the time?
Lately, I've been trying to save money on food by stocking up on things when then are on sale. I bought about 40 cans of albacore tuna at $1.00 a can last month. Block cheese was on sale for half-price last week, so bought three. I buy coupons for dog and cat food on eBay.
I usually keep the house in the low sixties in the colder months, but sometimes turn it higher depending upon activity level. Most of the time I'm on my feet moving around, so that keeps me warm.
We have it so good. This esp. came home after watching "Slumdog Millionaire", the movie that got the Oscar award for best movie this year.Have you seen it?
