Meat Pasties...from Michigans Upper penninsula ..
Filling: 2 lbs round stead cut up into 1/4" cubes...5 lg. potatoes cut up into 1/4" cubes, 1 small turnip or rutabaga cut up into 1/4" cubes...1-2 lg. onions diced, 1 tbl. salt, 1 tsp. fresh grnd. pepper,
Dough: 4 cps. flour, sifted; 2 tsp. salt; 1-1 1/2 cps shortening; 10 tbl. ice water.
Cut shortening with flour & salt until mixture is coarse. Rub flour together with fingers to produce a coarse crumb. Add water & form into a ball. Divide it into 6 equal round balls. Dust with flour,& seal in plastic bag . Chill for 1 hour. Mix steak with vegetables, onion, salt & pepper. Roll each dough ball on a slightly floured board/surface to a 9" circle. Add 1-1 1/2 cps. filling to each. Fold pastry to create a "half-moon". Seal the edges and make a couple of slits on the top. Bake at 400o for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.
