Thank you so much for this topic! Between how many people I cook for and health problems I am always trying to find recipes I can do. Thank you for all the great sites loved all of them!!
Since I am now looking unemployment straight in the face, instead of eating chocolate by the metric-ton (though I may still do that as well,) I thought it was time to make a few positive changes in my life. My cooking skills are barely above "1) open can, 2) heat" but since I discovered I actually enjoy cooking instead of buying boxed (gasp) I started digging up some sources.
I started with allrecipes.com because it popped up first in a google search, and they have zillions of recipes. Quick - need to know how to make a mimosa for Valentines day breakfast? a dozen different kinds are there. I use it when I want to examine several different ways to make something (usually because I don't have half of the exotic ingredients needed)
However, recently I've been looking for a bit more meat (pun intended) - rather than a simple listing of recipes, even rated ones, that I could get in a cookbook. I was looking for something more akin to talking to a person. Someone who was recommending dishes and showing me how to cook them.
Currently I have been working my way through thepioneerwoman.com/tasty-kitchen/ which has a good vibe that feels right for me. Specifically I like their blog thepioneerwoman.com/tasty-kitchen-blog/ which features a real person writing about a specific dish they liked and why and stories behind their attempts to cook it, etc. For those who don't know, a blog is a daily column similar to the ones in the newspaper.
Their recent entry thepioneerwoman.com/tasty-kitchen-blog/2010/03/a-tasty-recipe-thats-the-best-frosting- ive-ever-had/ titled "the best frosting I ever had" is a great example and with a title like that, I really want to try it.
I hope those are of use to someone, I'm very interested in this thread as soon i will have to be a lot more creative with my food budget.
