I don't think it is possible to get the level of fitness you or I want unless we also change our eating habits. But we can lower intake without lowering amount. For instance, if at breakfast we substitute a half a cantaloupe for an oversized pastry, we've kept the volume the same but reduced the calories. The trick is to eat high-volume but lower-calorie (and healthy) fare. Isn't it wonderful that most fruits and vegetables fall into this latter category? The densest foods are mainly processed foods because they are loaded with sugar or fat--or both.
