Happy Fourth of July
American flags, fireworks and family gatherings are traditional ways to celebrate this holiday. But what could be more patriotic than getting and staying fit? By optimizing our health, we reduce the emotional and financial burden on others, and we are ready to serve in times of need. Our love of our country can inspire us and give us the courage we need to change and adopt healthier habits. Because of the friends we have chosen to make here in the Fat 2 Fit community and where we live, we enjoy both the support and freedom to transform our lives. Indeed, we are a fortunate people.

Good 2 Know Fitness Tip and Featured Member: QuilterInVA
When member Hungryallatime wrote that she struggled with an out-of-control appetite, several members responded with wonderful tips and suggestions. The strategy recommended by QuilterInVA, a regular contributor, was particularly imaginative:
“Here's the acid test to distinguish between true hunger and mind hunger. Ask yourself what vegetables you want to eat. If you don't want vegetables, it's mind hunger. I keep a pretty jar with slips of things I enjoy doing, such as reading a book, watching a movie, taking a bubble bath, going for a walk, quilting and so on. When I want to eat at inappropriate times, I take a slip and do what is on it.”
If you study QuilterInVA’s recommendation, you’ll see that her strategy relies on self-knowledge, planning, conscious awareness of choices and action. Those same principles can be applied to almost any obstacle that we face as we move toward our fitness and weight-loss goals.
QuilterInVA’s creative fitness tip for appetite management is a gift to our community. To express our appreciation, I’m sending an autographed copy of my book, From Fat to Fit: Turn Yourself into a Weapon of Mass Reduction. We look forward to more tips from QuilterInVA.
A Few Reminders:
Week 12 of Dr. Kelly Traver’s Life-Changing Program: This week, we conclude Dr. Kelly Traver’s 12-week life-changing program. Homework and exercises are based on the principles and ideas in Dr. Traver’s book, The Program. Last week we focused on successful aging; this week we will focus on how we can continually maintain our health and fitness.
Helping New Members Get Started: We’ve added helpful information for newcomers in a topic discussion titled “Where and How to Begin: Guidance for New Members.” If you’re confused about where to begin, you can read the topic here and then post any remaining questions. Members will jump in to help you. You can also learn more about how to navigate in a tutorial here: http://tinyurl.com/2d4ke34.
Next Week's Fat 2 Fit Featured Member: Next week, I’ll pick a member to lift up to our community. The featured member will be eligible for one of the grand prizes at the conclusion of the Weight-Loss Challenge. Who will the person be? Maybe you?
