I'm 59 years old and finding myself in a position that I never imagined would happen. My parents, no longer with us, always taught me to be self reliant without being overly materialistic. My father was a college professor and my mother worked part time in retail. Their retirement was wonderful. Simple, not abundant, but wonderful. Their house ( on a 4% GI loan) was paid off and they were able to live on his very small pension and social security with medicare. I foolishly thought life would be similar for me. We've all had a major awakening on these issues, haven't we?
So here I am, unemployed and looking for work for months. My part time personal and professional growth business that I've had, off and on, for years has dried up. In this economy, it's the first thing that people and small busiensses will let go of. I also have years of very succesful fundraising and other nonprofit work, but that market seems to be saturated at this point. Living in Northern California with many ties of family, friends and spiritual life, I'm looking for some new ideas and answers to be able to support myself longterm. I have a Bachelors degree in Social Welfare from a prominent mid-western state. I'd love to do some kind of training or certification, but am not sure what. I get suggestions to get a Masters degree, but wasn't accepted the last time I applied. (In college a long time ago, I was sure I never wanted to go to grad school, so didn't put enough effort in to get really high grades) Besides, I'm not really comfortable with going into that much debt at this time in my life. I know that so many people are in a similar situation, but I'll never give up hope (faith) and am still confidant someone out there will say the perfect thing that will strike a new cord of inspiration in me.
I believe that we all have so much to share with each other. The more lines of communication we open, the closer we come to answers to individual needs and to the needs of all of us as a society. i just joined this group today and am excited about the possibilities. I not only am seeking some answers myself, but hoping to be able to help others.
