In Response to TITANIC - SEE IT AGAIN IN 3D by Littlemite
The other night on PBS there was a show called 'Saving the Titanic' which focused on the ship's crew - specifically those in the boiler rooms and the electricians. It was a dramatization, but based on factual information.
It showed how the crew managed to keep the power on for 90 minutes after hitting the iceberg, saving many lives, though not their own.
Learned a few technical points -
- the ship went through 820 tons of coal a DAY to keep the boilers running
- one problem that exacerbated the situation was that poor quality coal had been taken on at Southhampton. Coal would occasionally heat up and smolder or even catch on fire. This happened in a critical storage area and significantly weakened the hull in the middle of the ship.
- The fourth smokestack was strictly decorative in order to make the ship look that much more impressive.
I'll have to review my thoughts on seeing the re-release. based on your enthsiasm.
