Hi Judy, As I was searching through the AARP site, I came across this discussion and in particular, your posts. I am right where you are. I have decided to consider retiring within the next few years and realized I don't know what I want or where I want to be. I agree that there is a great deal of information about financial planning, but I'm not finding much that is helpful in planning where to live, what sort of housing, etc. I don't know where to begin. When I try to see what is available, most housing sites ask for the city. I don't know what city or specific town. I'd love to search by state, but I'm not finding sites that will do that. I'd also like to read about the pros and cons of renting vs owning, condos vs private home, 50+ community vs age-diverse, etc. I'd love to find a discussion group. If you find one, please let me know! I'm in the Mid-Hudson Valley area of NY. Thanks, Sylvia
(Wow! I just noticed your post is dated from 'last' Summer!)
Sylvia ~ I've seen just a little of the Mid-Hudson Valley area; it's beautiful! I was there in the middle of the Summer; the weather was 'near perfect'. How are the Winters there? Lots of snow and ice, I'd imagine?
Good Luck in doing your research, networking, considering options, and ultimately deciding where you might like to live. As you well know, opinions of folks in other parts of the U.S. can sometimes be quite, quite different from opinions generally held by those in New York!
