In Response to IS this forum still alive? by varnell41
Maybe on a train and can't use their computer? I know that my life is on hold as far as travel right now, but I did log a lot of miles in 2007 and 2008. Since I live a good 6 hrs drive from Amtrak now, Lubbock Tx, hopping on the train is not easy for me now. I have to travel by bus to Albuquerque or Fort Worth
.I still have lots of tales of thing that happen on my Amtrak trips some good and some not too good.
The state of the economy right now , is on everyone's mind and sorry to say the future of Amtrak is right there in the mix. Getting people out of their cars and on to mass transit is like pulling all their teeth at once. I wonder what we can do as private citizens to help this? I know lthat when I have the funds available , an Amtrak trip to my brother in Ga. is in the works.
I know that bus travel is out because of my age and girth. Think about that for a minute and you will get it The seats are so small that the American public can not sit on a bus for 20 hrs and eat greasy food and try to use the restroom with no running water. I know I don't fit the seat ,( I am 5'8" and not a tiny lady by far. The story is a lot different on a train. You can go to a snack bar or dinning room and restroom are on every car. You want to rest, you can drop back you seat and not kill the person behind you. there is a table to sit things on if you want to read or write and there is room in you seat and the floor that is your space. You can get up and move around and not come back and find your seat occupied.
The big hold up of people using the train? Being in a hurry and wanting to be some place yesterday or sooner. Plane travel with all its restrictions and hassle is the way and look at all the thing you can gripe about at you next get together. I sometimes think people are not happy unless they can gripe about something. I prefer train travel over bus and plane and since I am retired I don't have to worry about timetables. I loved to sit across from some younger person on the dining car and listen to them finally get the message, Train travel is so civilized ,you can connect with people, the scenery, and the world in general. and you are not mashed into a cattle car of a bus or plane. What's not to love?
