This summer we went from Washington, D.C. to Portland, Oregon on Amtrak. While the trip took 3 days, it was so much fun. The best way to see the country is by train. We went to Chicago on the Capital Limited and then switched to the Empire Builder. Oh, it was a trip to remember.
The only complaint we had (this since we are neat freaks) was the cleanliness. But we got a bedroom and bath to ourselves. It's interesting to try to balance when going from car to car or even to the bathroom to shower. The crew on the Empire Builder were wonderful. Very caring and nice. The food was good but their menu needs to change a bit. We went out and back to we really got to see what travel was like before everyone hopped on a plane.
I recommend this trip to everyone. They even had Park Rangers to talk on the areas we were going through. I almost dislocated my neck, looking out the windows to see everything. We met some very nice people in the dining car. They seat you with other people, four to a table. Everyone was fun to talk to. And we met some nice people traveling the U.S. from Australia. We sat with two teens who filled us in on what their country was like.
You really get to appreciate this country when you get to see this great land of ours like this.
Treelover, It was so nice to hear about your trip. It sounds so very interesting. I want to take that same trip but guess it will have to wait until next year as I just got back from Hawaii and need to save up some more travel monies.
