In Response to RE: GOVERNOR ELECT KASICH SAYS NO TO PASSENGER RAIL FOR OHIO by RonnyDakota
Excellent post and point RonnyDakota. Many of us overlook the environmental and lifestyle aspects that are benefited by passenger rail. Consider the passenger load that a single interstate train can accomodate, then compare that with the number of aircraft that would be required to handle the same number. Secondly, compare the fuel type and amount expended for the passenger train as opposed to the aircraft. Finally, my biggest bug about air travel (sorry I haven't traveled by bus for more than 35 years), the aircraft seats are smaller than ever before, they are closer to the next row than ever before and they are less padded, ergo much harder for sitting. Now some folks may look upon that as a nit, but when you get to my age, sitting on one of those hard airliner seats for an hour or more becomes a form of torture.
Compare that situation with the comfort of a passenger train. Seats are comfortable (no matter what class of ticket you buy), they are wide, have nice foot rests (similar to an ottoman), and the tray table drops down in a comfortable position, NOT affected by the position of the seat in front.
Hungry? On a modern aircraft, unless you bring it aboard with you, tough going, nothing to eat, not even peanuts or pretzels except in extremely rare circumstance. On the train, at minimum a cafe car, but on the interstate trains, there are dining cars with menu selections and food prepared hot and onsite.
Lots of things make passenger rail the best of all worlds. The only drawback is the time it takes, and the dearth of routes and destinations.
My wife and I travel by train at every opportunity. We will opt for a train unless it is simply impossible due to time constraints or the train does not go anywhere near our final destination. We actually will take rental cars for a final leg IF it is not a great distance.
