Check it all out at www.aarpmagazine.org/1968">http://www.aarpmagazine.org/1968 and share your own memories of that unforgettable year below. What event or experience changed you, and how? Was the course of your life altered in any way?
I was married at the end of January, 1968 and lived in the Ann Arbor, MI (location of Univ of MI) when Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy were assinated. I was working part-time at a department store and remember the fear of rioting, and the steps the city and businesses had to take to prevent riots in the area.
Detroit had quite a riot around that time. My brother went to a Tigers baseball game and got caught in a bad area as they were leaving after the game. Turned out it was the beginning of a riot that lasted several days. People were rocking the car he was in, fires and looting were already occuring. Very scary and dangerous time.
In June of 1968, my husband and I bought a house outside of our hometown. We had a finished basement with a bar and our home soon became a place for going away and welcome home parties for our numerous friends and relatives, as they joined the service, went to Vietnam, etc. I also lost several friends in the Vietnam War or to later deaths due to Agent Orange.
So, in my life, there were good and bad times that year. But it is a year that most of us will never forget. One of those years that we remember where we were when various events occurred.
