In 1968, I was a grad student in Chicago trying to stay in school and make ends meet. One of the many part-time jobs I had was driving the “pick-up bus” for sightseeing tours which started at the Hilton Hotel. One sunny morning with a bus loaded with delegates' wives, I came through Grant Park, up over the IC tracks and down toward the Hilton, and there were the protesters in the park across Michigan Avenue from the hotel. Ringing them on all sides, two deep, were National Guard troops who had just taken the sheaths off the bayonets of their shouldered rifles. The gleam of the sun flashing off the shiny steel left a chill in my gut that I can still feel today.

May I suggest you read the book, Liberal Fascism, by Jonah Goldberg?
