Andrew Wyeth (July 12, 1917 – January 16, 2009) was born and lived most of his life in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. His father, artist and illustrator N.C. Wyeth -- was known for his "blood-and-thunder," swashbuckling illustrations for Kidnapped, Robin Hood, The Last of the Mohicans and Robinson Crusoe. Andrew Wyeth's watercolor and tempera landscapes and portraits are more gentle, yet somewhat mysterious, and encourage the viewer to look to the deeper meaning of the characters and surroundings. Jamie Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth’s son, is also a well known artist. The Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford is internationally know for its collections of the works of all three artists.Andrew Wyeth’s best know painting before the Helga Pictures, Christina's World” (painted in 1948)shows a young woman with a disability sitting alone in a field looking longingly toward a house and barn. The first impact is her isolation and distance from what is perceived as where she wants to be. Then, even with her back to the viewer, one can feel her sense of purpose and strength. It is both a beautiful picture and a powerful statement. From 1971 to 1985, Wyeth created approximately 240 works that would becoame known as the “Helga Pictures.” Helga worked for Wyeth’s neighbor in Chadds Ford and sat for him during those years, as Wyeth created the works in privacy not telling even his wife. First released in 1986, The Helga Pictures, in their simplicity, intimacy, and depth are generally considered Wyeth’s greatest achievement.I'm unable to copy the pictures here, but will put them on "My Photos" on "My Page." If unable to access, google Andrew Wyeth's Helga Pictures. I would also encourage anyone who is able to visit the Brandywine Museum.I
