I didn't think I'd like this new British drama series, but true to form for most Brit shows, it's excellent!! http://www.pbs.org/programs/call-the-midwife/
It takes place in East London in 1957 .. whose "mean streets" were recently given a facelift for the Olympics, but has a period feel that's more like the 1940s. The central character is Jenny, a just-out-of-school nurse-midwife, who thinks she's going to work in a small private hospital, but learns quickly that it's a nursing order of nuns who minister to the very poor. They get around the narrow cobbled streets on bicycles, their medical bags on the back rack!
Considering that it's 1957, it's shocking to meet some of their patients .. like a Spanish woman who's pregnant with her 25th child (all living), married to a loving Englishman who speaks no Spanish at all .. and obviously doesn't believe in "birth control" in any language!
DID YOU WATCH?!
