In Response to RE: The Doctor Shows by vhester
There are different degrees of the problem and different variations. Most of the ones shown on TV are beyond that I think.. and I guess I think that if a person is at the point of some of these people where the home is unsafe to live in then you have to do what is necessary to get them help including calling the authorities to do a home inspection if you needed to. It is hard seeing some of them to remember that they are ill not just hard headed. It is a really horrible disease.
I don't know if the families could do anything to help the hoarders. According to the family of the person I know with this problem, some of these people are quite functional in society. It's just behind closed doors they have given up and quite trying. In fact, a lot of these people hold down well paying jobs; how else could they pay for all those things they are hoarding? LOL! If we were to meet these hoarders on the street, we would have no idea they lived the way they do. So I would imagine this is the problem the families are against. I suppose if you took pictures of the homes to the courts, maybe the medical community could step in an try to help. But, would most courts have ways to help these people turn their lives around or would they take their homes away and stick them in homes?
